Hula
Sophie had a blast wearing flowers in her hair and doing the hula dance to the live music at Keoke's Paradise. When she saw some dancers putting on a show at the shopping center, she begged to get on stage and dance.

The Lost Beer
Marcine was up late packing. We slept in, ate breakfast leisurely, then got packed up to head to the airport. We wanted to get there plenty early b/c of the terrorist stuff in London. When we pulled up to the rental car drop off, we realized we left the beer from the monastery in the room! Since we were 4 hours early, we had plenty of time, and arranged for the hotel shuttle to bring it to us.
Getting through security was a breeze and then it was just a waiting game til we could board the plane. Sophie was as good as gold. We let her watch her dvd player for a while, and then she drifted off to sleep until we landed in San Francisco.

Heading Home

Baby's Armor
Last night at the laundromat, we heard from a Texan law student about the terrorist attack in London. Bummer. That means security will be crazy tight at the airport and well have to get there super early. Oh well.
It's a nice day, and we’re heading back to Munich using autobahns only. No more crazy mountain roads for us, thanks! The law student we met suggested we go visit Schloss Ambras, which is an old castle on a hill. He attended a function there and said it was really nice.
They had a great collection of armor and weapons. They even had a set of armor for a tiny tot, as well as a set of armor for an 8 foot man. There were also portrait galleries of many of the royalty figures of Europe. We hit the grocery store earlier, so we ate a little lunch before heading back to the autobahn for Munich.
By the time we got to Munich, it was still early afternoon, so we decided to hit an old monastery for lunch. Boy was it an ordeal finding it. There were no directions to get there other than the basic map we had from Avis. For some reason, the traffic through the city at 1:30pm on a Thursday was awful. We had to ask directions, and finally, got there an hour later. But we were STARVING!
We hiked up the hill to the restaurant. The food was super super good and the views from the outside terrace were fabulous. But when we went to the church, we found it had totally been rebuilt and wasn't really old at all. It was pretty gaudy inside, but interesting.
When we finally got to the airport hotel, I was relieved to find they had a room for us. We weren’t sure what we were going to do if they were booked. We took Sophie swimming in the pool, which she loved. Then we ate dinner at the hotel, but Sophie was so wild, I couldn’t really eat. She just needed to go to sleep.
It was so nice having cribs in every hotel. What a life saver. I couldn’t imagine her in the bed with us. She slept just great in the cribs the whole time.

Rain, Rain go away!
No one told us that Austria has a little known monsoon season. We have found this out by chance. Thank god we brought all our rain gear - coats and umbrellas.
We drove up to the top of a mountain on a teeny windy road to a town called Hinterholn where there are supposedly dairy cows in meadows and one little restaurant. It was so cloudy and rainy we couldn't see over the sides of the sheer cliffs, which was a good thing. I imagined getting to the meadow that Maria was singing on, but all we could see were clouds, so we immediately began the harrowing 6km descent.
Marcine tried to get our clothes washed at the campground laundry, but the ONE dryer was broken. After dinner, we once again headed to Innsbruck to hunt down the only laundromat in any town. It’s called Bubble Point. I am paying to surf the internet here.
We walked downtown this am after breakfast and hit the market and tried to find some warm clothes to buy. But there are only small little specialty shops in the downtown.

Adventure on Tick Mountain
We left Reutte today to find a new adventure. We had done almost everything in the town. As we were driving out of town, we came across the Ehrenberg Ruins. It was really awesome! We hiked up and it wasn’t too bad. I had to be very careful at the top b/c it was rocky and I was nervous about my ankle.
After the long hike to the top, we let Sophie play for a while, out of the kelty backpack. She loved it - she was running around the tall grass, putting wild mountain flowers in her hair, climbing up the little hills. When we put her back in, I noticed a tick crawling on my shorts. Then I saw one on my shoe! We had changed her diaper there on the grass!!!! AHHHH! We stripped her down, and checked her, but found none on her, luckily. The views were just awesome, and I didn’t hurt my ankle, so that was a success.
We continued motoring to Innsbruck. On the way, we stopped at a GREAT little restaurant and had some wonderful cheese spaetzle and grilled turkey. There were little rabbits in an enclosure and they were so friendly Sophie loved them. There was also a little playground for kiddies, complete with a plastic playhouse. While rearranging the table and chairs inside, Sophie fell down, hit her head, and got a nice bruise along the side of her eye!
When we finally made it to Innsbruck, it was so yucky. Just a not-so-charming city, so we high tailed out of there to a little town called Hall. It’s totally cute, and our hotel is wonderful - non smoking rooms even!!! AND free internet access. There were lots of hot spots in the city. Next time, we'll definitely bring a laptop. You pass by strawberry fields on the way there, and the sign says "Selfen pflucken" something like that. We figured it's "you pick your own".
We headed to the public pool, which was closed since it was raining, but Sophie liked the walk in the rain anyway.
It was so nice to eat dinner in a non-smoking hotel! Dinner was pretty good, and with the weather so yukky out, it was nice to stay warm inside.

Castle Day
We got up early, ate breakfast, and headed out to King Ludwig’s castles. We didn’t think we were particularly early, but seemed like some of the first people there. We got our castle tour times, then proceeded to hike up to the first castle. It was not far at all. There were mostly steps to walk up.
The tour guide was a young blonde girl. She was really very friendly, perky and entertaining. Very open to questions as well. The castle was just beautiful. About the time the tour began, Sophie was whiny and ready for her nap, so I ended up nursing her on-the-go during the tour where she fell asleep in my arms.
Tour 1 began at 9:15am and Tour 2 was at 11:15am. I was a little worried about how we’d get between the 2 castles so quickly, but it wasn’t a problem. There were horse-drawn carriages lined up on the walk ways, and it seemed a bit tempting to take one, but we really wanted to hike (I was missing my exercise). It was a good hike up there, and although it was sprinkling lightly and kind of a cold damp morning, we were hot by the time we got to the top. There were so many elderly people hiking up there it was amazing. I hope I am able to hike up a walk that steep when I am that age! There were some little trinket stands on the trail up there, so we got a Coke bottle for one of Marcine’s co workers who collects them from different countries. There were lots of people smoking at the top, which cracked me up. I can’t think of anything more refreshing than a smoke after a hike!
This tour was awful! There were at least 40 people in our group and we couldn’t hear the tour guide at all. It was very hard to walk in the rooms or find a space b/c of all the people. And Sophie was again ready for a nurse and nap, so I did my on-the-go action again. After the 4th And did I mention, that when you enter the castle, you have to hike up the spiral stairwells in the circular spires? room, I heard the tour guide say, “That’s the end of the tour”. I was like, are you kidding? It was crazy. The castle was just huge, but we hadn’t seen half of it. The king only lived there for 10 mos. And the castle was never finished, but still!
We stopped at the café on the way out and I had, what else, a piece of Black Forest cake! Yummy. We had stocked up on fresh baked pretzels at the bakery next to our hotel that morning, so we broke those out for Sophie.
The hike down from the castle was the best part of the whole tour by far. We found a little trail that led to some steep steps through the woods and could hear rushing water through the woods. We got to the bottom and could see a big rushing water fall! It was so cool. We continued the hike, and it was pretty wet and scary. At times, the trail was steel girders driven into river rock, suspended above the rapids! YIKES - you could see right through the steel grid you were walking on. It was just beautiful. At the end, the water was driven up a ramp to power some sort of logging operation.
Once in the car, she fell asleep immediately. We then drove to Fussen, which is a super cute downtown. The old downtowns in the small villages have pedestrian only areas which are really nice for strolling down, but not that easy to find parking. We put Sophie in the stroller asleep, and strolled around the town. We ate a nice lunch at a place that had a good non-smoking room. Passed by a place called Schnee-ballen. It smelled like a donut shop, but had these huge balls of something, kind of rolled, then dipped in various icings. I asked what they were, and the guys said Pancakes. I felt I’d be sick if I even tried one, so we passed.
After we got Sophie’s teddy bear, she was acting wild in the stroller. She was hurling herself back and forth, and hurled herself right out of it onto the sidewalk! She got a nice fat lip from that, and earned herself a tight buckling in for every subsequent stroller ride.
That night we actually ate dinner at the hotel restaurant, NOT in our room. Sophie was finally adjusted to the time.

Room with a view
We slept in today, ate breakfast as late as possible, then walked to the downtown area of Reutte with Sophie in the backpack.
It's a cute little downtown and neighborhood. It seems the Germans put just as much time and effort into making walking and biking paths as they do the roads. There is a paved path that cuts between the backyards of houses to get to the downtown so you don’t have to walk along the road.
We stopped by the little church which was just beautiful inside. Once we got back, Marcine took Sophie to the park while I napped.
Ate at some restaurant downtown, which was OK. Marcine got the schnitzel and I got the goulash. MMMMMMM! Sophie was so exhausted, she fell asleep over my shoulder, but woke up in time to eat French fries.
